Sampling Bias in Population Studies

چکیده

Modiied versions of the life time distribution are often used in survival analysis. The modi-cations depend on how we choose individuals for the study and on the assumptions on the behavior of the population. A rigorous point process description of the Lexis diagram is used to make the sampling mechanisms and the preconditions transparent. The point process description gives a framework to handle all possible sampling patterns. The setup is generalized so it can handle more complicated life descriptions than just lifetimes, and the disability model is used as an example. Two setups can be used. Conditional on the birthtimes, the modiica-tions of the life time distribution are left truncation and either right censoring or truncation. Assuming that the birthtimes can be described by a Poisson process the modiications are length bias and the recurrence time distribution known from renewal theory.

Accounting for Sampling Error When Inferring Population Synchrony from Time-Series Data: A Bayesian State-Space Modelling Approach with Applications

BACKGROUND Data collected to inform time variations in natural population size are tainted by sampling error. Ignoring sampling error in population dynamics models induces bias in parameter estimators, e.g., density-dependence. In particular, when sampling errors are independent among populations, the classical estimator of the synchrony strength (zero-lag correlation) is biased downward. Howev...

Studying the joint effects of population stratification and sampling in case-control association studies.

Population stratification (PS) is referred to the systematic difference in allele frequencies between subpopulations in a population. It could cause a false-positive conclusion in a case-control association study, where the association is due to the structure of the underlying population, not a disease-associated locus. In this paper, we study the joint effects of PS and data sampling when the ...

Selection bias in population-based cancer case-control studies due to incomplete sampling frame coverage.

BACKGROUND Increasing numbers of individuals are choosing to opt out of population-based sampling frames due to privacy concerns. This is especially a problem in the selection of controls for case-control studies, as the cases often arise from relatively complete population-based registries, whereas control selection requires a sampling frame. If opt out is also related to risk factors, bias ca...

Methodological Challenges in Estimation of the Life Time Prevalence of Alcohol Consumption in Iran: Current Practice and Guidelines for Futures Studies

Background: The prevalence of alcohol consumption in Iran cannot be estimated because large variations have been observed in the reported prevalences of alcohol consumption. The main aim of this study was to assess the methodological challenges in estimation of the life time prevalence of alcohol consumed in Iran. By the same token we provided a standard approach for future res...

Association between Food Insecurity and Weight Disorders of Children and Adolescents in Iranian Population: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Background: The link between food insecurity and weight disorders of children or adolescents remains controversial. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to clarify the association between food insecurity and weight disorders of children and adolescents in Iran. Methods: PubMed, ISI Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, Magiran, and SID databases were searched up to August...

Bias and Unbias Comparison between Economic Statistical Design T2-VSI and T2-FRS Control Charts

The Hotelling's  control chart, is the most widely used multivariate procedure for monitoring  two or more related quality characteristics, but it’s power lacks the desired performance in detecting small to moderate shifts. Recently, the variable sampling intervals (VSI) control scheme in which the length of successive sampling intervals is determined upon the preceding values has been proved t...
